Counter Reflections

I like the way objects are reflected on our kitchen counter and I especially like the way bright fruit is reflected.  I used gouache and a white pastel pencil on black paper for this sketch.

Giraffes, People and Plants at the Zoo

Giraffes are such beautiful animals. The possibility of sketching them motivates me to get over to the zoo. I think this is my fourth sketch of giraffes in two years. For this sketch I stood across the road and … Continue reading

Food Court at the North County Mall

The San Diego Urban Sketchers met this morning at the North County Mall’s food court. It was a good turnout and a great location for people sketching. This gouache sketch is in an 8 X 11 inch Moleskine sketchbook.

Eclipse with a Friend

Today’s eclipse in San Diego was far from the path of totality. It got a little dim and we had fun with our box viewers and sunglasses, but the eclipse pretty much overlooked us. This sketch is more of what … Continue reading

Setting Up a Sun Shade

Today was a travel day and, while I am glad to be back home, I am sad that I did not paint today. I drew this a few days ago when I was sketching on the beach in Florida. I … Continue reading

Our hosts made dinner and so much more for us this week in Florida. And I had fun making quick sketches of them in action. I like the harmony of these two and think I caught a bit of it … Continue reading

Beach Frisbee at Sunset

I stood on the balcony sketching as the sun went down. I don’t know which was harder, trying to catch the quick motions of the people or the fleeting colors of the sky.  Both were gorgeous and I worked as … Continue reading

Plane Approaching

We are visiting cousins along the Florida coast some 20 miles to the west of the Tampa Airport. This is the night view as I look out over the sea. The bright light is an approaching plane, not a star … Continue reading

Nostalgia

Visiting a cousin who grew up with you long ago can cause the memories to come cascading back, especially if heightened by old photos and the music of your past.  The body language of these two cousins on a shared … Continue reading

Near Dateland Arizona

As we drove across Southern Arizona late this afternoon, I sketched the landscape from the comfort of an air conditioned passenger seat. I focused on catching the big shapes of the desert mountains and sky with pastel. It was a … Continue reading

At Elk Pond

Elk Pond in Telluride Mountain Village is a place where people can come to fish without a license, sunbathe, kayak, paint and just hang out. I love the way the water catches the reflections of the sky, mountains, trees, and … Continue reading

Meadow on the Village Bypass Trail

Mountain Bikers love the Village Bypass Trail and I had a great time marveling at their speed and courage as I stood above the trail and sketched this morning. I considered including a few but they flew by so fast … Continue reading

View Through the Balconies

Today was a good day for rain and a good day to paint indoors, or at least to paint from under the shelter of the balcony above. I was going to paint the clouds over the mountains but noticed how … Continue reading
