When we were recently in Reno, we took several walks along the Truckee River. These walks inspired this gouache sketch.
I began by underpainting the entire sheet with casein, a technique I plan to explore this month.

I like how simplified everything is, yet there’s also detail.

It has the clarity of after a winter storm and the air is clean and clear but not warm. Nice design with lots of action. Don’t see the familiar black outlines.

Thank you for your comments. Normally, I paint on a black surface and leave unpainted areas that form outlines or negative space around the big shapes. In this piece, I underpainted with an orange casein and left some of it showing through the sketch. I plan to explore this idea in upcoming sketches.
