Old Friends at Work

My husband and I have been visiting Denmark. One of its attractions is meeting up with our many old friends. The first Dane we ever met was in grad school 1975 and since that time I have often sketched this … Continue reading

Odds and Ends

We drove north from Bonn late this afternoon and stopped much later in Flensburg for the night. Since this was not a good day for sketching, I decided to post some sketches from the past week. One of the pleasures … Continue reading

After the Party

My sister hosted a baby shower today for our nearly arrived grand nephew. Her house and garden were gorgeous and it was so much fun to visit with everyone. Afterwards we sat on the patio and talked about it while … Continue reading

At the Beach

Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve in Oahu Hawaii is a snorkeling park full of sea life and coral. It also had a very cute family that I had a chance to sketch as I sat behind them on the beach.

Waiting

It was the last pose of the morning, and our model seemed to radiate a sense of waiting. She sat on the edge of her stool, leaning back but not at rest. She looked off into the distance as though … Continue reading

Admiring Cherry Blossoms

I stopped by the Japanese Friendship Garden in San Diego’s Balboa Park today to find that the cherry trees are in bloom. There were many people walking along the canyon paths and admiring the beauty. Using my iPad, I tried … Continue reading

PB & J at the Zoo

I sat down near a family at the zoo today and after admiring the speed with which the mother made PB & J sandwiches on the spot, decided to sketch them. I started with the baby on the right. Within … Continue reading

Sunset Comes to the Olas Altas

The busy street along Mazatlan’s Olas Altas is transformed four evenings a week into a pedestrian walkway. Children take to the street with their bikes, families stroll, neighbors touch base, young couples connect, and visitors marvel at its glorious beauty.

The Art of Waiting

Sometimes, rather than pack up my sketching gear, it is easier to take my iPad when I go out. Yesterday my sister and I stopped for a pedicure here in Mazatlan and as I looked out I was glad I … Continue reading

Late Night Scrabble Players

While my fellow Scrabble players carefully and slowly calculated potential Scrabble moves last night, I happily documented their efforts. I like this sketch because the figure on the right seems to be thinking strategically while the figure on the left … Continue reading

A Second Stuffed Bird

Yesterday I drew this bird but did not like the background. Today I added more gouache paint to the background and scraped it around.  Then I made the sketch less dark and cropped it by using Photos and Procreate.

Playing Games

Thanksgiving week is winding down, and our kids are on the way back to their homes. One of the many delightful parts of holidays is playing games together. We learned a new game that involved convincing others of the believability of … Continue reading

Watching Videos and Nodding Off

It is late on the day after Thanksgiving and we are watching videos, nodding off, and sketching. I have my iPad and am sketching using the Procreate app. It has been quite some time since I have drawn using … Continue reading

Editing Sketches with Apps

This was an interesting afternoon. I went back and edited some of my sketches from the week with Procreate, Snapseed and Photos, all apps on my iPad. In the sketch above I adjusted the tables in front of the two … Continue reading

Pumpkin

Procreate, an art app for the iPad, recently had a major update and I thought that it might be fun to work in it this evening. After sketching a pumpkin on black paper with a white pastel pencil and gouache, … Continue reading

Close-up of an Unnamed Plant

This afternoon I walked up to the college and sketched closeups of the flowers and leaves that belong to a plant whose name I do not know. When I got home I propped up my two sketches on my desk … Continue reading

End of the Last Day of the Workshop

I sketched these three lifelong colleagues two weeks ago on July 17 at the start of the workshop they were organizing together. Their workshop ends today and they are in the same living room sharing some last thoughts. Sketching them … Continue reading

Planning for the Next Day

Three tired co-organizers gathered tonight to plan for the second day of their Workshop, just in time for me to sketch them with a gel pen. The figure on the right was too small compared to the other two so … Continue reading

Presenting to the Group, version II

This is based on a black and white sketch I posted two days ago.  I used two apps on my iPad, Procreate and Snapseed, to crop it and add color and texture.  I notice that it adds more emotional value … Continue reading

The Presenter

One of the perks of living within walking distance of a university is the ease of sitting in on presentations by thinkers from near and far. Not only is this an opportunity to hear ideas, it is good for sketching … Continue reading

Flowers in a Vase

I kept working on flowers today, which was really about working on color, line, harmony and contrast. It was a lot to think about and I took several photos of the sketch as I worked on it. As you can see, it … Continue reading

Flowers on a Dresser

It has been a long time since I used Procreate on my iPad as the major medium for a sketch. Lately I have been so excited by gouache that I only used Procreate to occasionally make some minor adjustments to … Continue reading

Street Ball

The model yesterday at the figure drawing class conveyed fitness. She was strong, limber and full of energy and I caught some of her athleticism in the brush drawing of her above. One of my goals for this blog is … Continue reading

Relaxing after Dinner

Sketching with an iPad is so relaxing. With traditional media I do not always know when to stop. I often make additions to my sketches that detract from what I have already put on the paper and then ruin … Continue reading

Sunset on the San Diego Freeway

I drew as we made the slow trip home down I-5 from Los Angeles to San Diego this evening. Each time I looked up from the iPad to add more to my sketch, the scenery was different, so this is … Continue reading

A Third Attempt to Get the Debate Sketch Right

Monday night I sketched the presidential debate in charcoal and on Tuesday I worked in Procreate to improve the sketch. My cousin Ann commented on the second sketch, “Like it but I’d put him further back on the right and … Continue reading

Debate Sketch Revised

I wanted to improve yesterday’s sketch. In it both of the debaters appear too thin. I did catch a bit of Donald Trump’s peevishness, but did not convey Hillary Clinton’s air of confident readiness.  But what really bothered me was that although one … Continue reading

Man Watches Election News

We sat in the kitchen last night after supper, watching the latest news about the coming election.  It was so intense that I had dull the impact by pulling out my iPad and sketching. As I drew I noticed the expression … Continue reading
