Young Artist at Work

I watched my young relative draw. He got down on the floor and into his work and I admired the  gusto with which he worked. The room itself was dark and I had trouble  showing the dim lighting.

Two Cousins and a Photo Album

Two Cousins and a Photo Album

Two Cousins and a Photo Album

We are in Chicago visiting with Peter’s relatives and staying with a cousin who is the same age and shares a special bond with Peter. There is so much to catch up on, so much news, and so many great stories to share. This morning when the two cousins were looking at photo albums, I wanted to catch the feeling they have for each other. I think I might have been more successful if I had chosen a pose that involved talking to each other or sharing eye contact, rather than both looking at the album.

Impression of the Olympic Opening Ceremony

Sketch of the Olympic Opening Ceremony by Sarah Sullivan

Impression of the Olympic Opening Ceremony

I was on a plane this evening during the olympic opening ceremony, sitting between two strangers who were both watching it on their computers. The colors, flags, lights, marching athletes, waving and movement was gorgeous. I thought it might be fun to try to capture the feel of the ceremony as we few along.

Sun and Sea

Sun and Sea at Carlsbad Beach

Sun and Sea at Carlsbad Beach

I drove north of San Diego today to visit an old friend who is spending the week at a resort in Carlsbad. At the end of the day we sat on the lawn above a young woman who was soaking up the sunshine. I was distracted by the way the woman seemed to relish the sun but it was not a good time to pull out my sketchbook. Later when I was back home I tried to recreate the scene using some of my saved sketches for reference, but also thinking about how to convey the feeling of the sun in our faces and the beauty of the glow of the light on the sea and sky.

This is a pen, watercolor, Procreate and Snapseed sketch.

Dog Watches Man Clean Camper

Dog Watches Man Clean Camper

Dog Watches Man Clean Camper

After the six-month trip with an abundance of subjects and scenes to sketch, I am learning to see possibilities for topics in my ordinary life again. The couch, the blinds, the dog, the vet’s office, cleaning the camper, it turns out that I am surrounded with good options, if only I notice. And what could be a better sketch than Luke watching us clean out the camper?

This is a pen and watercolor sketch on multimedia paper.

At the Vet’s

At the Vet's

At the Vet’s

We went to the vet’s and waited a bit after our appointment for Luke’s new meds. I had my small sketchbook along and was able to get a pen and ink sketch of the receptionist going over instructions with another woman. They left before I could add color so I did that later with Procreate.

Luke Sunbathes in August Heat Wave

Luke Sunbathes in August Heat Wave

Luke Sunbathes in August Heat Wave

It seems very odd to sunbathe in this August heat but our dog Luke seeks out sunlight despite my efforts to keep the blinds closed against it. If he could drive I bet he would take off for dog beach and loll about in the sun all day. I am still working on conveying light and this scene with the sunrays sneaking through the blinds across Luke caught my eye.
