Jaffa Street, again

Jaffa Street, Again

Jaffa Street, Again

This afternoon I drew the Jaffa Street scene again for my last sketch in Jerusalem. Israel is full of captivating sites for sketching and Jaffa Street became one of my favorites. Its lively dynamic is perfect for catching people on the move and the street itself makes a wonderful background.

The challenge of a street scene is showing people in motion so I used light gestural lines and avoided details. I tried to endow the same liveness in the buildings and trees by placing the windows a little off kilter.

View of the Dead Sea from Masada

View of the Dead Sea from Masada

View of the Dead Sea from Masada

Today we visited a kibbutz for the day, taking lots of pictures but not getting any sketches.

This is a sketch I began on the Masada trip and finished this evening. The view is from the top of Masada looking out to the Dead Sea and the Jordan Mountains. There are many challenges to this sketch, including conveying the distance in the strong lighting conditions and absence of vegetation, and defining the more organized rocks of the ruins from the rocks on the mountainsides.

Vase with a Sprig of Dried Flowers

Our furnished apartment here in Israel for the past three months came with a handmade vase and a sprig of dried flowers. I looked at it appreciatively countless times and included it in the background of several sketches.  I wanted to capture it alone before leaving.

Good to Put Your Feet Up

Good to Put Your Feet Up

We left the house at the crack of dawn, climbed Masada, a six mile round trip, and then swam in the Dead Sea for an hour or so. After such a long, hot and wonderful day, it was time for the adventurers to put their feet up and for me to sketch.

Outside the Museum

Outside the Museum

The road in front of the Israeli Museum has an attractive sweeping curve which I sketched this morning. Today’s sketch pretty much focuses on the same view as a sketch I did back on February 14. Interestingly, both times as I was finishing up, people walked into my view and I included them in the sketch at the last minute. While I like to draw almost everything, I especially like drawing people and was glad this trio waited for their ride on the edge of my sketch.

Quiet Time

Quiet Time

The time difference between San Diego and Jerusalem coupled with a lot of walking through the Old City made for two very tired guests at the end of the day today. This is a quick sketch of them as they checked in on their devices before heading off to bed.

Mother and Baby Wait at Airport

Waiting at the Airport

Mother and Baby Wait at Airport

I went to the airport to pick up our friends and while I waited I sketched a bit. This tired mom and baby were sitting nearby and I quickly sketched them both.
