Our rainy season is beginning in San Diego and people were out on Torrey Pines State Park enjoying the change of weather. The surf was wild this morning. I was bundled up trying to keep my sketches from blowing away but the beach had a few swimmers, some of whom stayed in a long time without wet suits. I completed three sketches and selected this one because it conveys something of the attraction the sea has for some people. I was struck by the long strides this man took as he walked right into the water and began swimming. I kept the colors simple because on a stormy day the clouds and sea blend in together.
I began with pencil line and then used watercolor. Later I added torn paper in a few spots to show the breakers better.
