Gray Skies at Torrey Pines

Sketch by Sarah Sullivan of Torrey Pines with Gray Skys

Gray Skies at Torrey Pines

It was overcast today at Torrey Pines, and the hill in the background seemed to be part of the sky. After a bit, the light changed, and I put this sketch aside to work on a second sketch. Now I think I like this one best, even though the part of me that wants to cover all the paper with paint is not satisfied with the black areas in front.

I like this work special because the white paint over looks like a real rainy day.

LOVE your neutrals and semi neutrals, Sarah. This is a fabulous success. Sometimes less is more…………. but our brushes just want to keep on dancing on the paper! You nailed it!

The sharper darkness in the foreground contrasts very satisfyingly with the pale and atmospheric background.

The dark area in front looks like deep ocean on my iPhone. Will you be in SD April 12 – 15? I don’t have a way to contact you

I really like this Sarah. I heard you aren’t satisfied with the black areas in front. I feel like they add a nice dramatic contrast as well as a grounded feeling to your composition.
