Pine Tree and Thunderheads

I went down to the meadow expecting to paint the distant Sneffel Range which normally dominates the view to the south. But the mountains were hidden by an incoming storm with mesmerizing clouds. So I painted the thunderheads framed by a ponderosa pine instead.

This sketch is done mostly with gouache. However, the tips of the pine needles, the bark of the tree, and some of the grass in the background are made with chalk markers. Some of the chalk marks were put down under the gouache and some went over it.
