Lemons and Lines

Our Tuesday night Zoom group revisited Still Lives with a lovely composition featuring lemons fresh from the trees of Fresno. I added some lines this morning to give it a dash of drama.

  1. This is wonderful. The blue white and yellow scheme is fresh and crisp and elegant. I just love the lemons.

    • Thank you, Claudia, the lemons were fun. I tried something new for me. First I put down the bright yellows and let it dry. Then, without overlapping, I added the shadow color and let it dry. Finally, in the space between the two areas, I connected the two looks. I think this gave the crisper look.

      • I went back to look at the picture again and I see what you mean. I agree, about the crisper look, and also that it subtly distorts the shapes in a really interesting way without making them less recognizable or less pleasing. I am put into mind of how lots of times I have various elements on a background and then paint around them, sometimes stopping there and sometimes re-covering the whole background. I love how that gets rid of too-tight lines. I feel like you have done the same thing here with your technique. I love it.

      • This a good description of a process, thank you!

I agree with Claudia, the blues and yellows work so well together. Cezanne meets Matisse – Wonderful!
