It is easy for me to overlook sagebrush, a ubiquitous plant found across the southwest, but on a spring day with distant mountains in the background, the muted colors of sagebrush got a second look.

Deliberate Sketching 
I love this one. The sky is such a strong presence, and I think the sage brush looks so free- the whole scene looks as if the wind is blowing. Beautiful.

Thank you, Claudia! The wind was blowing, and I wanted to go back to the car for my jacket—but not as much as I wanted to stay and paint!

Hi Jason, thank you for your question. I stood in a field near Interstate 80, about 10 miles west of Reno, Nevada, looking towards the Sierra Nevada Mountains. I love it there because the mountains rise so forcefully above the rolling hills. I am usually attracted to mountains and am not sure what caused me to focus on the sagebrush. I am back in San Diego now and hope to paint our local sage rush later this week.

Sounds like an ideal spot to draw/paint, Sarah. Yes, I know what you mean when other things, in this case sagebrush, somehow become the attention of focus. Maybe because it was prominently in the foreground? On a funny note, as I’m not familiar with your country of residence, I assumed the south-west of England! (lol!) An area I’m very familiar with. That’s why the sagebrush baffled me!

Sally. I really like Sagebrush. You got the truth of them. How big is it? Is it available? I have a blank spot on my wall right next to a genuine Annie Lewis mountain scene. I am willing to pay big bucks to help keep you in gouache!
