Montrose Colorado Morning

I am in Montrose Colorado for the weekend and could not resist quickly sketching this view across the fields to the San Juan Mountains!

Staying in a Seat

Staying in a Seat

Our model today was wonderfully expressive and so much fun to sketch. Selecting a favorite for the day was hard. I finally decided on this one because it reminds me of how I feel when I just want to get up but have to stay in my seat.

Torrey Pines Canyon

Sketch by Sarah Sullivan of a Torrey Pines Canyon

Torrey Pines Canyon

I painted up on the mesa at Torrey Pines today. I sketched an area with sandy ground that looks across the mesa towards the cliffs. In the end, I thought the sketch looked too flat and empty. So I added some vertical lines to suggest depth, but perhaps got carried away.

Waders

Sketch by Sarah Sullivan of two children wading at Torrey Pines State Park

Waders

I was painting very quickly, just doing exercises to try to capture the movement of the water. When these two youngsters walked into my sketch, there was still room for them, so I added them in, and it made a picture.

The morning was warm, but the water was still so chilly and wild. The two kids relished the waves and paid little attention to their parents’ worry about the cold.  It was wonderful to see so many people out enjoying the sun and water.

Watching the Sunset

Sketch by Sarah Sullivan of a woman watching the Sun Set

Watching the Sunset

There is something about watching the sunset that captivates us all. And there is something about watching another person who is being moved by nature that makes me want to capture their expression forever.
