Playing at Be’er Sheva’s Fountain Park

Playing at Fountain Park, Be'er Sheva

Playing at Fountain Park, Be’er Sheva

We spent the day yesterday at Be’er Sheva, a city on the edge of the Negev Desert. I had a good day sketching as I made my way about the city, but it was not until I sat in the shade to rest a bit that I got a sketch that says, “Be’er Sheva” to me.  I found the people low key and down-to-earth. A lovely, diverse group of people, going about their day, cheerful and enjoying the moment, much like these children.

I sketched the original version of this in black marker and watercolor. This morning I imported it into Procreate on my iPad where I lightened the marker lines, added the white lines and made other adjustments to color and white space.

Man in Plaid Does the Dishes

Man in Plaid Does the Dishes

Man in Plaid Does the Dishes

Our stay in Israel is coming to a close in two weeks so we are increasingly busy as we make the most of each remaining moment. I was only able to get in one quick sketch today. I like parts of it, the man’s stance and the way the counter and cabinets narrow across the page. And it succeeds in telling a story, which is one of my goals for this blog. If I were to develop this sketch further, I would add depth to the counter and work on the plaid shirt.

This is a pen and iPad sketch.

My View from the Back Seat

My View from the Back Seat

My View from the Back Seat

While driving back to Jerusalem with our good friend,  I took advantage of my seat in the back and began this sketch on my iPad. The ride was bumpy and I told myself that I would edit out the stray and wavering lines when I got back to the apartment. But later when I put the finishing touches on the sketch,  I liked them and so kept most.

This is an iPad sketch using Procreate.

I Liked the Way She Stood There

I Liked the Way She Stood There

I Like the Way She Stood There

I noticed her standing there looking out at the sea, with her hands on her hips and her face lifted to the light. It seemed as though she were checking on its wellbeing. I liked the way she stood there; I admired her stance at the edge of the sea.

This a pen, paper and iPad sketch.

Agave at the Sea of Galilee

Agave at the the Sea of Galilee

Agave at the Sea of Galilee

Looking south down the Sea of Galilee, the lake seems almost to merge with the sky and hills at the far end where the River Jordan begins.

I am working on creating a sense of depth in a landscape. In this one since the colors of the agave plant in the foreground are similar to the colors of the lake and sky, I tried to show depth by muting the distant colors.

This is a pen and watercolor sketch on multimedia paper with some adjustments using Procreate.

Salt Deposits at the Dead Sea

Salt Deposits at the Dead Sea

Salt Deposits at the Dead Sea

Today’s sketch is based on another on line drawing I made at the Dead Sea Tuesday. My goal today was to give the landscape a sense of depth.

I used cooler colors with less value for the Jordanian mountains, intending to make them recede. Additionally, I lowered the mountains and increased the the portion of paper the sky was on to make the mountains seem further away. Finally, I used warm colors and defined the foreground more to make the foreground seem closer.

This sketch was made in ink on multimedia paper and then imported into Procreate where color was addded.
