Open studio

300 - 1

Sketching at open studio evokes a childhood memory of the feeling of working on an independent assignment alongside my classmates, earnestly, quietly and with focus. At open studio as soon as the model takes a position, sets the timer, and settles down, the artists fall into that same state of flow as they sketch away. Perhaps this has something to do with why I enjoy being there so much.

Today I thought about line as I sketched. I used a black water-soluble pencil to define the body outline. I also made thick lines with watercolor in the model’s hair, and used the hard edges of the watercolor to give shape to the body.

Napping couple with a small umbrella

200 - 1 (5)

I spent the morning at Torrey Pines State Beach, just north of San Diego. It is a great place for a hike, swim, snooze or sketch. The contrast of the movement of the sea and swimmers to this napping couple with the small umbrella caught my eye and I got several sketches of them. Today I had an easier time seeing the variety of lines I could use to show the sea, dunes, street and bluff and I was more aware of the possibilities.

At the zoo

200 - 1 (1)

The zoo is great place to sketch people of all ages. This was a warm up sketch but I like the composition and the work I accomplished with my practice goal of using a variety of lines. I used marker and soluble pencil to make the marks and kept most of the lines bold, long and uneven. I was able to vary the pressure with which I drew and this resulted in range of line weights. I will go back soon so I can build my skills with drawing animals.

Beach runners

100 - 1

I went to Mission Beach today and sketched away the day. The sea was energetic and so were a great many of the beachgoers. Even though the runners have a gravity defying angle to their posture, I like this sketch because of their enthusiasm about being there, which can be seen in their body language, especially in the lift of the central figure’s arm.

I got away from my deliberate practice goal of intentionally using a variety of line. I only have three types of line weight in this sketch. Although the lines do show show movement, position, and importance, the paint itself is the dominant means I used to communicate a story today.

What’s up with the figure in red?

1 (3)

It looked and sounded like a family reunion. Laughter, excited voices all talking at once, people helping themselves to the food on their neighbor’s plate, everyone enjoying the moment, everyone, that is, except the figure in red. She sat back, silent, watchful and glum. Was she related, was she new to the group? I wanted to ask her what was up only I did not dare. All I could tell was that she looked very uncomfortable. I tried to show this by exaggerating the contrast of the group’s facial expression, engagement, seating, and clothing to those of the woman in red.

This past week my goal for deliberate practice was to capture groups of people in a setting so that it all combined to tell a story. I wanted to show through the movement and interaction of group members what was being experienced by the group. This was a challenging goal. Locating a group took ingenuity and sometimes the group would not assume the positions I wanted them to take. And interpreting the experience of the group by the placement of image on paper was often beyond my technical skills. My colors got muddy, the proportions and perspective were off, and I drew odd images that just did not help establish a clear story. Nevertheless, I learned more about planning a sketch before jumping into it and more about making adjustments to the scene in order to better tell a story and all of this has potential to improve my daily work as a sketcher.

Next week I plan to revisit a previous goal for deliberate practice and work on intentionally using a variety of line in each sketch I do. My success criteria will be to have many kinds of line in each sketch and to use each because it is the best line I can select to show movement, light, position, and importance. I want to use line deliberately so the viewer understands what strikes me as important about each scene I sketch.

More talk

Version 2

This is another sketch from Friday night and a continuation of a focus on telling a story about the interaction of people in a group.  Arms say a lot about the intention of speakers and the reception of the idea under discussion by listeners and I used the three sets of arms to indicate this. It was a lively discussion and the trio shifted their arms and bodies as they got involved in the ideas. I had to be patient and wait for just the right moment to draw each person.

I have been using my the camera on my phone to transfer my sketches from my sketchbook to my computer and blog. Tonight I scanned in my sketch and the clarity is much greater than the versions from a photo. I plan to switch to scanning from now on.

Talk

FullSizebob carolRender

My deliberate practice goal this week is to convey a story through the interaction of a group and I caught a few people exchanging opinions this evening in our home. The eye contact, open mouths, and arm positions indicate talking and listening and also something about how the opinion is being received. The exception is the green figure who appears to be somewhere else mentally. I used pen and watercolor.
