Another from my recent beach series. In this one, I strove to capture the feelings of mystery and beauty that being on a beach at night brings. Additionally, I continue to explore the patterns that artificial light makes at night.

It was such a good week in Topsail, NC. Reconnecting with my husband’s family was great, and on top of that, I had a week of beach sketching. I like these two Plein Air sketches better than ‘Jumping Waves’ because the brush strokes and shapes are more decisive and strong.

More sketches from people watching. I hope you can sense this small child’s excitement at jumping the waves.

I was out early, enjoying the quiet of the morning beach. I wanted to capture this feeling in this sketch.

May your light shine ever brighter and illuminate your way, whether you are crossing a beach with your iPhone or the space that leads you to your dreams!

Yesterday night we walked along the shoreline and looked all around with flashlights. Besides illuminating the shells, clams, and crabs, the light made dramatic shadows from the people and the sand mounds. I loved the extreme lighting, and took lots of photos, one of which I used as a beginning for this sketch.

We are at Topsail Beach, North Carolina, for my husband’s family reunion. This beautiful part of the country, with its gorgeous beach, warm water, and steady breeze, makes an excellent setting for a week-long get-together.
And it is a fabulous setting for sketching; it seems that everywhere I look, I see a potential sketch. My favorite scene today was a journal writer perched on the boardwalk leading across the dune, her skirt moving with the wind. I liked her air of focus amid all the beach action.
