Double dejavou

Today, even though I sketched at a life drawing open studio, I was strongly reminded of my past years in schools. First of all, in the midst of artists who could sketch for three hours, I felt like the reader who lacks the stamina to read independently during class, the one who needs an intervention. And then there was something about the intense scrutiny and non-stop recording by the other artists that took me back. In schools we used to take a team approach to observing teaching and learning so that we could pool our thinking about best practices. We would go in with clipboards and record our observations, encircling the teacher, much like we encircled the model today.

I somehow managed to sketch the 19 poses, mostly using watercolor, pen and pencil. Although I intended to deliberately practice using ambient light to strengthen my sketches, I became confused about the lighting in the studio setting. The lighting was not natural, all the windows and doors were draped, and a few spotlights illuminated the model and cast strong shadows in multiple directions. I ended up just putting down color as best I could.

A Listening Mom

Mon in a restaurant

We sat near a mother with four children today in a restaurant. I got two quick sketches of the group and later combined the images into the one above. The baby is reaching for mom. The older sister is reaching for her mom’s attention which I conveyed through the sister’s open mouth and slightly worried brow.  You can see from the mom’s body language that she was relaxed despite the demands on her. She paid attention to each of her children, listening intently to each in turn and earned my admiration, which is the message of this sketch.

My focus for deliberate practice today and for the next week or so is to capture ambient light.  I notice in my recent sketches how much the lighting can impact the message I convey and I want to understand how to intentionally use light in my sketches.  I got a bit confused today, putting down yellow because the floor was yellow and purple for the shadows and this somehow made the mood harried. Finally I washed in some pink and the mood lightened.  This may be a sketch I redo.

What Are We Doing?

FullSizeRender (100)

I walked back up to the college today. It is a great place if you are a sketcher looking for people to draw. I sat across the walkway from two students and was able to capture the gist of their expressions and posture in several different sketches. I chose this one to post because I caught a bit of a dejected ‘that’s not right’ attitude from the figure on the left and a proactive ‘I have to figure this out’ from the figure on the right. Altogether, the sketch conveys a note of confusion about what the two women should do next, on this second day of fall classes. The simple ink lines for the two figures bring them forward and contrast with the less defined other figures. The light was harsh and I think I would have shown this better if I had used yellow in place of the purple and blue shadows.

Need help?

It is the first day of classes over at San Diego State University and I thought to walk up for a quick sketch. I like the exuberance of the lines in this one, and the way the yellow and pink convey the heat of this August day.

Reunion

FullSizeRender (98)

I don’t normally draw from photos because I get tight and it shows. But I wanted to mark this day, the anniversary of my father’s death, with a reminder of his impact on our large family. My brother Joe shared a photo of our family proceeding to the site where we mingled our father’s ashes with our mother’s, and the photo somehow reminded me of  ‘Niños Pidiendo Posada’ by Diego Rivera. In both images there is a mixture of solemnity and joy and I want to capture this. Rivera sets a high standard but also gives a good model to use for insight. I drew many versions of this and this is my best one. I never came close to capturing Rivera’s radiant figures, but even so I feel like I honored our parents in a way that they would have valued.

Mathematicians Socializing #2

FullSizeRender (62)

I sketched both of the ‘Mathematicians Socializing’ yesterday but did not get a chance to finish them until today. My intent with both was to show the hard work of thinking productively. I frequently sketch people engaging in casual interactions, but the facial expression and body language of deep thinking is different. This is a type of human interaction that I find beautiful and I want to be able to convey it. I used line to define the figures and background elements, but attempted to keep the line at a level where most viewers would not notice. The mutual eye contact, the calm listening of the standing figure, and the relaxed body and hand gestures of the talking figure all combine to show focused attention. The books on the table support the idea that thinking is going on. My August 7 post, The Reading Lesson, also shows the kind of focused listening that is part of thinking in pairs or groups.

Mathematicians Socializing

FullSizeRender (61)

I have been wanting to convey people thinking together. We had an early arrival for dinner Friday and as our guest began to socialize I was able to capture two sketches of people thinking together. I did not get the hand waving but I think the way they use books and paper to support their discussion rings true to the purpose of their interaction. I sketched in pencil and watercolor, then later went back with more color. The line is subtle, mostly grey, but used throughout the sketch. I will post the second sketch later today.
