Nostalgia

Sketch of two men sitting on a couch overlooking the sea by Sarah Sullivan

Nostalgia

Visiting a cousin who grew up with you long ago can cause the memories to come cascading back, especially if heightened by old photos and the music of your past.

The body language of these two cousins on a shared couch called out nostalgia to me and I began to sketch them as they reconnected. Their relaxed and slumping bodies, one man’s arm over his head extending out to the other’s arm, the downcast heads, the gazes on a shared screen, it all conveyed how wonderful it is to still have someone who shares your earliest and most bittersweet memories.

This is a gouache and pastel sketch in 12 by 12 inch black Derwent sketchbook.
