At the Beach

Sketch of two people talking by the edge of the beach by Sarah Sullivan

At the Beach

This evening after swimming in the warm water along the Florida coast I made several quick sketches with white pastel line in a small 9 x 9 inch black paper sketchbook. Later, long after most people went to bed, I added color using mostly gouache and a bit more pastel.

I really like wandering around making simple line sketches of unsuspecting people as they interact. It is so much more likely that I can capture the motion and attitude of people if I can finish the sketch in a minute or two. I liked the cheerful interaction of these two and wanted to convey it in this sketch.

Plane Approaching

Sketch of a the light a plane casts as it flys over the Florida Coast by Sarah Sullivan

Plane Approaching

We are visiting cousins along the Florida coast some 20 miles to the west of the Tampa Airport. This is the night view as I look out over the sea. The bright light is an approaching plane, not a star and the trees are lit by the light from our building. I love looking out at the glean on the ocean that the planes make as they near us and wanted to capture it.

This is a pastel sketch on black paper.

Nostalgia

Sketch of two men sitting on a couch overlooking the sea by Sarah Sullivan

Nostalgia

Visiting a cousin who grew up with you long ago can cause the memories to come cascading back, especially if heightened by old photos and the music of your past.

The body language of these two cousins on a shared couch called out nostalgia to me and I began to sketch them as they reconnected. Their relaxed and slumping bodies, one man’s arm over his head extending out to the other’s arm, the downcast heads, the gazes on a shared screen, it all conveyed how wonderful it is to still have someone who shares your earliest and most bittersweet memories.

A Flowering Hedge and a Stone Wall

A sketch of A Flowering Hedge and a Stone Wall by Sarah Sullivan

A Flowering Hedge and a Stone Wall

Before we left San Diego today I had time to sketch a flowering hedge tumbling down a stone wall.  This is a pastel sketch on black paper.

Near Dateland Arizona

Sketch of mountains and desert near Dateland Arizona by Sarah Sullivan

Near Dateland Arizona

As we drove across Southern Arizona late this afternoon, I sketched the landscape from the comfort of an air conditioned passenger seat. I focused on catching the big shapes of the desert mountains and sky with pastel. It was a pretty good way to appreciate the desert in mid August.

My Plein Air Set-up

Photo showing my Plein Air Set-up by Sarah Sullivan

My Plein Air Set-up

Since today is a driving day I thought I would write about the supplies I now take with me when I paint on location. Before this summer I would go plein air painting, that is, paint on location, at most once a week, and then usually with my supply laden car nearby.

During the past six weeks, however, I went out plein air sketching most days by bike or by foot, often painting miles away from my home base. The first day hiking with all my supplies was a rude awaking as my stuff weighted far too much for me to easily carry.  As I staggered along that first morning I pondered, ‘Did I really need the stool, side table, backboard, extra paint, large palette, several sketchbooks, paper towels and who knows what?’

Over that first week I began to distinguish between essential supplies- an easel, paper, paint, pastels, water, and then all sorts of nice-to-have extras. Eventually I reduced the weight of my supplies into a manageable amount that fit into a wide-mouth day pack. And I learned to use the rack on my bike as a side table, my helmet as a shelf for holding my supplies and the ground as a seat for resting.

The photo above shows my set-up at the site of Elk Pond in Telluride Mountain Village and the photo below is a close-up of my painting supplies.

Here is what I always take:

  • A day pack
  • A lightweight easel with an attached hammock for holding supplies
  • Two sketchbooks- one large one for the painting and one small one for thumbnail sketches and scratch paper. The small sketchbook also has my color charts in the back for reference.
  • A small set of pastel pencils with kneaded eraser, blender and a pen
  • A pouch with paintbrushes, a few tubes of paint, a spray bottle, sponge, a few folded paper towels, palette paper, two small water containers and a few clips. The palette paper attaches to my bike rack with a clip and is a great space for mixing up color.
  • One small palette with some of my most used Holbein gouache paints (an old Windsor Newton watercolor palette with the original colors removed). Most of the wells have a a dab of white along with the individual gouache color.
  • A water bottle
  • A small ruler

And I sometimes take my bike, helmet, bug spray, sun screen, rain gear, a hat, a sun shirt or a fleece.

At Elk Pond

In the distance, a fisherman and a reader enjoy Elk Pond: a sketch by Sarah Sullivan

At Elk Pond

Elk Pond in Telluride Mountain Village is a place where people can come to fish without a license, sunbathe, kayak, paint and just hang out. I love the way the water catches the reflections of the sky, mountains, trees, and this particular fisherman and reader.
