Home Again

Sketch of a laundry area by Sarah Sullivan

Home Again

No matter how wonderful the trip, it is always good to come back home again.

Sometimes I avoid laundry but after two weeks in a suitcase it is a pleasure to sort through and get everything clean and back in place. I sketched this twice but the first did not match my cheerful mood so I added more brights and think it captures the moment and my attitude.

This is a pen and watercolor sketch.

Sketch of Swimmers at Stone Dam by Sarah Sullivan

Swimmers at Stone Dam

Yesterday we took a jungle walk up a creek to Stone Dam. With its clear water, rope swings, gorgeous foliage and several swimming holes it was a great place to visit but an overwhelming place to sketch.

Breakfast in Kauai

Sketch of people eating breakfast in Kauai by Sarah Sullivan

Breakfast in Kauai

What better way to start the day than to sketch with pen and watercolor? Especially a sketch of breakfast in a cheerful kitchen with a backdrop of the Pacific Ocean and the Kauai landscape? I like this sketch because it shows our slow start to the morning, each person reading, while I sketch off to the side.

Two Men, Their Computers and the Kauai Night Sky

Sketch of two men with their computers at night by Sarah Sullivan

Two Men, Their Computers and the Kauai Night Sky

After a long day it is good to sit on the lanai, soak up the spectacular Milky Way, and enjoy the companionship of old friends. It was not until these two pulled out their computers just before bed that I finally got a sketch I liked. Their faces became illuminated by their screens and balanced the starry sky just enough so that the composition had some pull between the two parts.

This is a gouache and pastel sketch on black paper.

Bev Makes Dinner

Sketch of a woman cooking in her kitchen by Sarah Sullivan

Bev Makes Dinner

It is so much fun to try to capture a lively scene. My friend Bev moves around her busy Hawaiian kitchen with a confidence that inspires my deep admiration. My only complaint is that she never holds still!

I sketched this with a fine blue pen and later went back with a black gel pen to add emphasis to parts of the drawing.

The Moment of Sunset

Sketch of the moment the sun sets by Sarah Sullivan

The Moment of Sunset

I have been noticing how just about everyone stops talking and moving to watch the moment the sun sets. I wanted to show how people are captivated by sunsets by contrasting the vivid colors in the sky with the focused attention of these four friends on the distant sun.

This is a pen and watercolor sketch.

Sketch of people on a bus by Sarah Sullivan

To the Airport

We are headed on to Kauai for the rest of our trip and got great seats on the airport bus for some quick sketches.

This is a pencil and watercolor sketch.
