The Kitchen Table Catalyst

Sketch of a man working at the kitchen table

Kitchen Table Catalyst

There is something about working at a kitchen table, especially late at night, that makes ideas grow. Maybe it is the conditioning from all those hours spent at the table as a child doing homework. Or maybe it is sitting in a cosy quiet place with no demands and a long evening to spend as you please. Whatever it is, this is my sixth sketch set in the kitchen since arriving in Israel and each time this kitchen setting seems to be a catalyst for productive thinking.

I wanted to say something about how we sometimes undermine our thinking by being too focused on getting things done, but this idea may be too subtle to communicate visually with my skill set. The idea is that when we give students and ourselves too many tasks, it can reduce our productive thinking because it eats away at our time and thinking takes time.

I tried to push the contrast between getting things done and thinking productively by placing the figure in the midst of thinking supports- computer, papers, books, and so on, but not having him physically type or read. He is sitting up, his head is tilted to the side as thinking heads often are, and he stares contemplatively at his ideas which are spread somewhere between his mind, computer, books and papers.

This sketch was done completely in Procreate, an app for the iPad.

Listening to Each Other

Sketch of a couple listening to each other

Listening to Each Other

I planned to sketch outside today but the heavy rain drove me into a cafe. There were artificial orchids on the tables and I got into drawing them.

Soon a couple sat at the next table and my attention shifted to them. One of my learning goals is to tell a story with image and there was something about their interaction that captivated me. I noticed how carefully they were listening to each other and wondered why. I tried to show their interaction by capturing the distinctive elements- the man’s steady gaze, his raised eyebrow, the way both figures leaned onto the table and their still posture. I also liked the buttons along the back of the woman’s blouse and how the color of her jacket complemented the orchid’s color.

This is a pencil and watercolor sketch on multimedia paper.

Happy Easter from Israel

Sketch of a man sitting along a path

Jerusalem Footpath

Celebrating Easter in Israel is an odd experience for someone like me. Holiday preparations here are of course focused around the Jewish holidays, not the holidays of other faiths. The stores are not full of baskets, eggs, and the Easter Bunny. Not all Israeli Christians celebrated Easter today either. The Orthodox groups will not have Easter until May 1, following the end of Passover. And we are not in the midst of a long spring break tied to the Easter holiday, which for an American who lived by the rhythm of the school calendar, is very sad indeed. Finally, the Israeli workweek begins on Sunday and Easter Sunday is no exception, so there was the hustle of work going on all day. Fortunately, chocolate knows no cultural boundaries!

But Jerusalem is full of footpaths bursting with flowers, especially so now that it is spring. I used three recent photos as reference and composed this pen and watercolor sketch on multimedia paper.

Caesarea

Sketch of People at a cafe in Caesarea

Saturday at Caesarea

We sadly left David and Tara at the airport and then went on north to Caesarea National Park, the site of a once grand old harbor and city that was built, destroyed, and rebuilt by just about every group that ever ruled the area. The park was full of people enjoying the spring day, the sights and each other.

We stopped at a cafe overlooking the harbor. As I sketched in the warmth I fought off sleep. You may notice that my sleepiness is projected onto most of the figures. While this was not exactly an accurate depiction of their mood, it does tell a common story of what can happen on a warm spring afternoon. And conveying a story through images is one of my goals.

This is a pen and watercolor sketch on multimedia paper. I used Procreate, an app on my iPad, to darken the figures and foreground.

Purim Butterflies on Jaffa Street

Sketch of Yaffa Street on Purim by Sarah Sullivan

Purim ‘Butterflies’ on Jaffa Street

Today Jerusalem celebrated Purim, a religious holiday that involves costumes and fun. We went downtown with the crowds and hung out, admiring the costumes and enjoying the festivities.

This is a composite sketch. I combined the parts of several sketches that best conveyed the joyful spirit of the day. I loved the two dancing butterflies in the foreground, the crowds, the slow moving light rail, and the way all of these come together on Jaffa Street.

I used a black marker with watercolor on multimedia paper.

After Another Tough Day of Vacationing

Sketch of 2 people resting on a couch by Sarah Sullivan

After Another Tough Day of Vacationing

After six miles on our feet visiting the university, the Israeli Museum and downtown Jerusalem, it was time to recuperate again on the comfy couch back at the apartment. I caught the feeling of being tired in this sketch a little more than in the sketch from two days ago, I think because the eyes of the larger figure are barely open and the computer is on the table, open, but not being used.

This is a pen and watercolor sketch on multimedia paper.

Learning about the Holocaust

Sketch of girl at a museum by Sarah Sullivan

Girl Learning about the Holocaust

I sat on a stool at the Yad Vashem Museum, doing quick sketches of people down the hall looking at a powerful photograph depicting the Holocaust. This little girl put her hands over her heart as she looked long and hard at the photograph.

This sketch is mostly done with a fountain pen with soluble ink and has a bit of watercolor.
