Hillside Path

Hillside Path

Hillside Path

Yesterday I was looking for a subject so I could practice applying flat color with a single brushstroke. There is a corner of our hillside yard that is shaded in the afternoon but also gets some rays of sunlight through a wooden fence and vines. The strong contrasts were perfect for my purpose.

Using black Bristol paper, I began with light pastel marks to set the composition and then painted directly onto the paper. I left some of the black paper for the darkest darks. I used gouache, mixing small amounts as I went along.

Normally I use a #10 round brush and a .5″ flat brush for most of my work, ignoring my many other brushes. I was curious if the look of the gouache would change depending on the brush used and methodically varied a #6 round, a #6 flat and a #2 round for this small 7.5″ X 7″ sketch. I see that brush size and type does make a difference and will work to understand these choices.

Holiday Shopping

Holiday Shopping

Holiday Shopping

It was a long line and the bright bouquet in the arms of a fellow shopper kept catching my eye. I began to watch as she interacted with her companion. They seemed so glad to be with each other that it made me glad to be there too. By the time I realized this might be a good subject for a gouache painting and then extracted my camera from my purse, the two of them were piling their groceries on counter and I thought I had missed the moment. Fortunately, holiday shopping being what it is, the couple had a little more time to wait and I got my photo.

Three Giraffes and Three People

Three Giraffes and Three People

Continuing today to work with gouache, I went to the zoo in hopes of sketching people interacting with each other and the animals.

This time I used the studier Bristol paper, but fumbled a bit with managing the materials in an outdoor setting. I ended up sitting at a distance from the giraffes because I needed a surface to hold the paint. It was also challenging to let the opaque gouache paint tell the story instead of relying on a strong drawing that shows through the paint.

Hot Chocolate and Christmas Stories

Hot Chocolate and Christmas Stories

Hot Chocolate and Christmas Stories

I went to a delightful ‘Hot Chocolate and Christmas Stories’ party today. It was mostly for the small children of teachers from the school I used to work at and it was wonderful to see the enjoyment they all got from the event.

I began this with a light pastel sketch using a photo for reference and then simplified the composition.  I wanted to paint on a paper with more texture than the Bristol board I used yesterday and made the unfortunate choice of pastel paper, which wrinkled from the wet paint. Worse, as I scanned the sketch, the paint flaked off when the lid pressed the wrinkles down.  Even so, I like this new medium and will keep at it for a while.

More Christmas Cactus

More Christmas Cactus

I follow many artists on social media and study their work for inspiration. Someone I especially admire is Menina Ricci; particularly for the way she uses color and brushwork. She often paints with gouache on black paper and you can see her work on instagram. After following Menina Ricci for half of the year I bought some new supplies and today began to sketch in her style.

One of our old Christmas cactus plants is in a blue and white ceramic pot that is shaped like a dove. I brought it inside, placed it on a tablecloth and sketched it off and on through the day as I had time. I enjoy the look of line in a sketch and like the way the black paper outlined my brushstrokes for the cactus and tablecloth. However, the shape of the dove seems overwhelmed by the outline.
