Grape Park, Escondido

Grape Park - 1 (6)

There was a big turnout today when the San Diego Urban Sketchers met in Escondido at Grape Park. There were many historic buildings from Escondido’s past to sketch, including the depot and train from the Santa Fe Rail line, which is the background for my sketch. It is a much longer and much more complex building but I altered it considerably, trying to fix mistakes as I sketched along in ink. I struggled differentiating the depot and grass because I tried to be accurate with the shades of green in the grass and building. Later at home I made the grass more yellow behind and in front of the row of sketchers but there is something odd about it still.

I enjoyed sketching my fellow Urban Sketchers and found it charming that most sketchers were sketching a building to the right but one is sketching a scene to the left. I emphasized the contrast by giving the left facing sketcher clothing with color, but it does not stand out enough for most people to notice. The body language of the group shows people working in a focused manner with eyes mostly on the sketch or the subject. This sketch does convey a story, which is one of my main goals. I wanted to again send a positive message about the value of like-minded people meeting to support each other in working on a common goal.

I drew with a black pen and then added watercolor.

Rachael’s sketching group

Rachael's Group - 1

Today I sketched with Rachael’s group in Spanish Village, part of Balboa Park in San Diego. Many of the artists sat in a gazebo drawing scenes from the surrounding area. I wanted to capture this and through it tell a story of kindred spirits spending time together. I tried to evoke this message by having all the heads focused downwards, intent on their hands and laps, with relaxed shoulders. The circle shows companionability and the warm colors suggest well-being, contentment and enjoyment.

Two parts of the sketch were not intentional but I think both add to the message. First, because the style is a bit abstract, it is not clear what kind handwork is underway. It could be knitting, a book club reading, jewelry making, or sketching. To me this suggests something broad and universal about like-minded people getting together for a common goal. And second, I like the way the shape of the flowerpot echoes the figures in the gazebo. I wish I had exaggerated the size of the pot and shaped the leaves to be more like the shapes of the figures.

I drew in marker and followed up with watercolor.

The over-the-hill gang hits the gym

Tamara - 1 (3)

Six of us exercise together each week and since I sat this session out I got a chance to capture the efforts of my compatriots. One of my main goals is to convey a story and I like this image because the range of exercise- running, lifting, pulling and doing crunches tells a story of a good workout. Although I sketched fast, many of these figures are composites of two or more people since our trainer keeps a fast pace. This sketch was my final and the result of trying earlier poses. I exaggerated the body position of the central figure, who was pulling weights, and had him look forward to show effort and concentration.  I worked at getting the torso twist just right in the person doing crunches and showing the legs of the runner in sync with each other. I need to work more on the person lifting free weights, I think he looks like he may topple forward.

I used marker and watercolor.

Learning

SDWS - 1 (1)

The San Diego Watercolor Society met today at Old Town, a park that commemorates local history with buildings, museums and educational programs. Just as I got settled for painting, a class and a museum docent gathered for a lesson at a nearby tree. As a newly retired educator I was captivated and immediately shifted my attention from buildings to learning. The class stayed for an hour or so and I was able to get several sketches and in the process make decisions about a message to convey through composition. This docent teaches in a way that make students eager to learn and teachers who can teach like this fascinate me. I showed the teacher’s expertise with his expansive arms, the upturned faces of the students, the uniform way the students attended to the teacher, and the way the classroom teacher and parent volunteer on the side have stepped back in deference to his competence. The docent is a big man but I exaggerated his size even more since the contrast helped convey through body language the respect the students and their teacher were showing the docent.

I used an ink and watercolor.

Torrey Pines on a windy day

Torrey Pines11.2 - 1 (1)

Our rainy season is beginning in San Diego and people were out on Torrey Pines State Park enjoying the change of weather. The surf was wild this morning.  I was bundled up trying to keep my sketches from blowing away but the beach had a few swimmers, some of whom stayed in a long time without wet suits. I completed three sketches and selected this one because it conveys something of the attraction the sea has for some people. I was struck by the long strides this man took as he walked right into the water and began swimming. I kept the colors simple because on a stormy day the clouds and sea blend in together.

I began with pencil line and then used watercolor. Later I added torn paper in a few spots to show the breakers better.

Luke keeps an eye out

Luke11.2 - 1

Communicating a story through image is one of my major goals for this blog. This sketch tells the story of a loyal dog guarding his household. Luke’s alert head and his choice of a location where he can monitor the front door and the activity on the street emphasis his commitment to keeping us safe. Luke also enjoys keeping an eye on things while I garden or sketch. He was the perfect model today as I sketched landscapes.

As I sketched I continued to try out options for foliage and stonework today. I am still grappling with how much detail I should put into the different elements of the sketch. I think I overdid the detail in the stonework and door.

I used pen, watercolor and watercolor pencil.

November patio

2015-11-01-0006

I would like to be more adept at capturing landscapes and so am beginning to practice this type of sketch. At the moment I am puzzled by how much detail to draw in clearly and how much to imply. If too much detail from a human figure is shown, the sketch can become overdone and dull. Just as most of us do not want to see every eyelash on a face, neither do we want to see every leaf on a bush. A balance of detail and suggestion was my goal for this landscape. The stonework on the right side of the sketch has too many lines. It would be better if I had made it more like the ledge where the flowerpots are. But should I have been more explicit with the foliage, at least in part of the sketch? Would a few well drawn leafs or flowers help convey how inviting this patio seemed to me?

I sketched in pen and watercolor.
